Exhibiting Your Zombie Fandom

At some point in our lives, we've all been big-time fanatics of something - anything. Whether it has been your favorite band, wrestler, politician, philosopher or television show, there has probably existed that itch to support that which you love.

When bitten by this bug of fanaticism, it often comes with some symptoms which compel you to make it visibly obvious where your loyalties lie.

Some may choose to wear a Kobe Bryant jersey, implicitly showing disdain for the Lebron James followers.

In my case, I like to show off my fandom for all things zombie.

That's right, I said it-freaking zombies.

And how do I go about displaying my love and affection for the legions of the walking dead?

Well, here's my personal guideline for displaying your zombie fandom.

1) Understand the history of the zombie concept.

What I mean by this isn't simply knowing your zombie movie lore, or worshipping George Romero as the innovator of the undead movie genre-although his name is interpreted by most as synonymous with zombies.

No, it isn't quite as simple as that. Read up on Haiti, West African tribes, and voodoo so that you can develop a rudimentary understanding and appreciation for resurrection and how the idea has evolved over the course of decades.

2) Brush up on zombie movie lore.

Now would probably be the time to be all over George Romero's nuts. With masterful directorial piece on the Living Dead series, he not only made zombies a cool concept, but managed to inject each of his films with a deeper subtext via the sociopolitical undertones that have shaped several character conflicts in his films.

Furthermore, you will probably come across several people who to belong to either the fast zombies movement or the slow zombies movement.

If you feel compelled to argue for either side, then be sure to provide solid and informed opinions. Otherwise, you will get chewed up and spat out-no pun intended-and probably disregarded as a rookie zombie fan.

3) Wearing merchandise goes a long way.

Nothing screams fanatical like wearing a shirt with the image of a half-eaten maiden or blood-dripping from an undead fiend's lip. If you can tell who's a Twilight fan by their Team Edward/Jacob garb, then it's a no brainer that mall-rats around the globe will know of your allegiance to the post-apocalyptic plague.

These steps should help you along the way of showing your love for all things zombie. And if anyone has a problem with you, just bite their arm off.
